My journey

I wasn’t always a therapist. In fact, I used to be a family law attorney. Although I loved helping my clients and interpreting statutes and caselaw, I did not enjoy how aggressive the field was. Fighting did not come naturally to me, and I was often told I was too nice to be an attorney. I was beginning to agree.

I also questioned who I was truly helping. Sure, I was hired to represent the husband or the wife in their divorce, but I often found myself more concerned about the kids stuck in the middle. Some of these kids were used as bargaining chips and many were suffering. I understood that as the attorney for the mother or father, my role in helping the children was limited.

I knew I wanted to help these kids, and I knew I wanted to help other kids in the community. So, with that knowledge, I took the leap: I went back to school and earned my master’s degree in counseling so that I could focus on helping children.

Since graduating from my master’s program, I have worked in a community mental health center, an elementary/middle school, and a private group practice. In these positions, I gained incredible experience in working with children, teenagers, young adults, parents, and families. I am now the owner of Robin Horvitz Counseling, LLC, where I help children, teens, and families in the community with their mental health needs.

I am so grateful for the work I do. I love hearing from a parent how their child’s behavior has improved, or their mood has lifted. I enjoy seeing families grow closer as they learn new tools of communication and expression. While it might have taken me a while to get here, I am so thankful for my journey and my ability to help people in need.

My education and professional outlook

I earned my bachelor’s degree in psychology from American University. After, I pursued my legal education at the University of Miami School of Law, launching my career as a family law attorney. I resumed my academic journey at Nova Southeastern University, where I completed my master’s degree in counseling. I am now a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in the state of Florida.

I am passionate about play therapy, a type of therapy that utilizes toys and games to help children communicate, process feelings, and learn new skills. I have taken numerous trainings in this modality and incorporate play therapy interventions in my work with children. I spend significant time nurturing my interest in play therapy by attending workshops, conferences, and networking opportunities. I am a member of the Association for Play Therapy and the Florida Association for Play Therapy; I am also the Networking and Outreach Coordinator of the South Chapter of the Florida Association for Play Therapy. I am currently working towards obtaining my Registered Play Therapist (RPT™) credential.

In addition to play therapy, I am enthusiastic about supporting children and families through the divorce process. Having the ability to combine my legal background with my mental health knowledge enables me to help children and families in a more informed and effective manner.

My approach

My therapeutic style is warm, fun, and nonjudgmental, creating an environment where my clients feel safe to express themselves. I use evidence-based modalities and interventions, such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), mindfulness, and play therapy techniques to address a wide range of emotional, behavioral, and developmental challenges.
